The demand soon outstripped the supply and diamond enthusiasts began to explore for other places to set up diamond mines. The charm of the gleaming stone led to starting of diamond mines in countries like Australia, Africa, Ghana, Zaire, Russia, USA, Brazil, Russia, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa and many others. At present, diamond mines from all over the world produce 130 million carats (26,000 kg). The out put is valued as about USD $9 billion and about 100,000 kg (220,000 lb) are synthesized yearly. African diamond mines are the richest source; approximately 49% of the world’s diamonds are mined from central and southern Africa. Diamond mines are operational in African countries like Congo Republic (Zaire), South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Central African Republic, Guinea, Sierra, Leone, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Lesotho. Jwaneng Diamond mine in Botswana is the richest mine in the world, it produces approximately 15 million carats a year. Apart from its huge production, the mine is also famous for the Blue Diamonds found there. The Argyle Diamond Mine in Australia is the leading diamond producer in the world in terms of volume but most of the diamonds from there do not have gem qualities. However it is the main source of Pink Diamonds, it produces around 90 to 95% of the world's pink diamonds.
