It’s the cut of the diamond that chiefly works on the brilliance of the stone.Brilliant cut diamonds first emerged somewhere by the mid-seventeen century. They were called Mazarins with 17 facets on the crown. Initially they were the rounded square diamonds since burting had not yet developed. Tolkowsky in 1919 gave a new twist to the look of the Brilliant cut diamonds. He suggested best proportions for the round brilliant cut diamonds that could emit a sparkling display of light and dispersion. The proportions suggested by him have under gone a lot of modifications, yet are the basis of all cut theories till date. The modernistic round brilliant cut diamonds exhibit a perfectly rounded girdle with 57 facets or 58 if the culet at the tip is included; 33 on the crown and 25 on the pavilion. The girdle may be frosted, polished smooth, or faceted. Recently most girdles are faceted with 32, 64, 80, or 96 facets (these facets are excluded from the total facet count). Some brilliant cut diamonds may have small extra facets on the crown or pavilion created to correct the flaws.
